And Their Stone Gods made Not A Sound

And Their Stone Gods Made Not A Sound

In 1999 I was selected to make a piece of work for the Charles Henry Foyle Trust's annual competition for graduate students.

This is an award for stitched textiles, a prestigious exhibition at the Forge Mill Needle Museum in Redditch follows selection.

Each entrant's textile is judged along side the design work.

The exhibition is fascinating because the design books are exhibited as well, allowing the audience to gain an insight into the artist's thinking.

The exhibition has a different theme each year, it was 'Voyages Of Discovery' in 1999. I took as my inspiration the effects of voyages of discovery made at different times to Central America.

I was awarded the first prize

The textile is whole cloth, hand-dyed.

After printing the cloth it was layered with various fabrics and then machine quilted.

Cutting back after stitching to reveal colour and create texture, I then stitched more and finally painted areas with acrylic paint.

It is a difficult quilt to photograph with  very subtle areas.
